Cats are some of nature’s most natural human companions. While the saying goes that a dog is man’s best friend, we volunteer the idea that a cat is man’s best companion. Their sensual nature, gentle touch, and penchant for cuddling up and purring when you are feeling low are among some of the reasons they are so great.
Unlike the stereotypes, domesticated cats are warm, loving creatures who care very much about their owners and being loved. They want attention and to feel safe, and when their needs are met, they become happy members of your household – each with unique personalities and a strong drive to love and be loved.
This blog is dedicated to those who haven’t had the joy of owning a cat. We’re going to look at eight reasons, both practical and from the heart, for why cats make amazing pets.
Cats are Clean
Dogs are lovable creatures who have personalities and hearts of gold, but there are times when they can smell quite bad. Cats self-groom regularly, and as a result, live most of their lives scent-free. Their daily grooming routine involves at least one thorough once-over of their entire body, leaving them soft and easy to pet without leaving a scent on your hand.
Cats are Loving
Popular media may have ingrained in our minds that cats are cold and indifferent, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Most cats adore their owners and want to share affection with them. This can come in the form of hanging out on your lap, snuggles at bedtime, them grooming you (by licking your hands, arms or face), or numerous others. Cats are like us. They want to be loved and to love others. Like humans, though, a lifetime of negative experiences or homelessness can make it difficult for some cats to trust people. Be sure to approach each cat with an open heart and an open mind.
Cats are Therapeutic
Stroking a cat’s fur doesn’t just feel good, it also calms us. Petting an animal is proven to lower stress levels in people. Their purring also provides another layer of calming as its unique pattern can soothe a busy mind. Additionally, cats are great for helping people get over the loss of loved ones. The companionship, their ability to sense when you are sad, and their need to be near their owners can be just what the doctor ordered. A happy cat can build a very positive atmosphere for adults and children, regardless of whether you have experienced loss or trauma.
Allergy Exposure
Did you know exposure to cats at an early age not only can reduce the chances of a child becoming allergic to cats, but to develop any allergies at all? Oddly enough, according to a 2002 study from the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (in the United States) found “high pet exposure early in life appears to protect against not only pet allergy but also other types of common allergies, such as allergy to dust mites, ragweed, and grass.”
Most Cats are Quiet
For the studious individual or anyone looking for a quiet pet, most cats are the right choice. We say MOST cats because there are some very vocal cats out there. While some may get loud before feeding time, others can meow all day long – though this is not usually common. Before adopting, ask about the cat and its vocal behaviour.
Cat Care is Affordable and Requires Less Maintenance
Cats are low maintenance pets when compared to dogs. While cats need litter boxes, love, and to be fed, they do not need to be walked multiple times per day, nor do they need constant attention. Cats are often happy to sleep much of the day away and come in for some snuggles when it works for them. The litter box needs to be cleaned regularly, but compared to a dog, this is a much easier way of handling their ‘bathroom time’.
Cats Keep Homes Rodent-free
As the natural predator to small rodents, the presence of a cat in the home can be enough to make mice or rats move on to the next house. Almost everything that composes a cat is designed to make them an apex predator in their size and weight class. They even sleep with their ears and sense of smell active to be able to attack at a moment’s notice.
Cats are Incomparable
There just isn’t any other pet like a cat; a self-responsible animal that takes care of its own hygiene and for the most part, keeps itself busy throughout the day without you having to take them out for a walk or to the park. They are kind and loving creatures who want to cuddle up next to their owners and fall asleep. There is nothing more rewarding than having a cat sit on your lap or fall asleep on your shoulder. If you’re considering getting a cat, think about what they can bring to your family.
They enrich our lives and the lives of our children. They are incomparable.
