The Little Things That Make Cats Happy

Cats are mysterious little creatures. In a matter of seconds, their mood can switch from happy and loving to angry and aggressive. On the plus side, they don’t seem to hold grudges, because at the rate they dole out those rapid-action slaps, they’d have a long list.

While it may seem like it at times, cats are not random. They are creatures of habit and they do have their own likes and dislikes. Just like us, certain things make them happy, and others do the opposite.

When a cat is truly in a state of bliss, you will know it. They frequently close their eyes, purr, and sometimes will even knead their air as if there is dough under their paws. The things that make them happy, though, are usually pretty simple. We could all learn a bit from our feline friends – to appreciate the simple things.

Cats all have different personalities, likes, and dislikes. There are, however, quite a few common favourites among the species. Many of things that make cats happy apply to little kittens all the way up to full-sized big cats like leopards and lions!

Sunbathing

This is a huge part of cat culture. Cats run hot, naturally, allowing their internal max temperature to average out to a few degrees centigrade higher than a human. As a result, their tolerance to hot heat and direct sunlight is quite high. If you own a cat, you’ll note they frequent sunny spots around the home throughout the day to soak up the rays and keep warm! While they do, they frequently fall asleep, squint, or purr – all signs of a happy, relaxed kitty.

Shreddables

Cardboard, paper, tissue paper, wood, cloth, and anything else that makes a satisfying shred when challenged by a sharp claw, are all top favourites of housecats. These items provide a couple layers of satisfaction for cats. On the surface, the shredding action, feeling, and sound are all invigorating to a cat, who is wired to keep their claws sharp and use them to rip things open. Secondly, the pieces of the shredded material can be used to make a nest! Cats love a good, comfy nest and you’d be hard-pressed to find one who didn’t!

Treats

Treats are the universal language of happiness for cats. A well-timed treat can turn an unhappy, distrusting cat into a carefree, happy kitty. Whether it's a piece of chicken or store-bought cat treats, make sure to dole them out moderately. A healthy cat is a happy cat.

Love and Attention

It goes without saying that love and attention are the most important parts of keeping a happy cat. Being included in your family, receiving regular petting and scratches, and being talked to in a loving and kind way are all things your cat will not just enjoy, but they will love. Many cats adore being treated like little babies/children and respond positively when talked to directly using happy and kind tones.

Final Thoughts

In the grand scheme of things, cats aren't complicated. They appreciate the little things in life –a sunbeam, a crumpled piece of paper, your undivided attention, and a tasty treat now and then. Embrace these little things and you'll find your cat will become more and more comfortable showing their true personality, partaking in events around the house and spending more time with you, their favourite human!
